Introduction:
Whether tucked up in your luggage or hanging in your home or lodge, the Selous Washbag captures the romanticism of a bygone age and pays homage to one of the most iconic figures in African exploration.
Our new Mara&Meru™ canvas and leather Selous Washbag is a classic piece inspired by the British explorer, officer, hunter, and conservationist Frederick Courtney Selous. It is beautifully designed to carry all your toiletries and is easy to use.
The bag can be closed by means of securing the leather straps around the folded bag, neatly tucking away the pockets and compartments and reducing its size to perfect travel proportions. On arrival at your destination, the hook can be unfolded from the bag once it has been opened out. Simply hang it up in your safari tent or lodge for easy access to the various pockets.
The convenience of the Mara&Meru™ Selous Washbag is not limited to travel alone. Hang the washbag in your home as an eye-catching and elegant way to store your toiletries and to get that "safari feeling" every day.
About the man who inspired Steve to design the "Selous" range within our Mara&Meru™ brand:
Frederick Courteney Selous DSO (31 December 1851-4 January 1917) was a British explorer, officer, hunter, and conservationist famous for his expeditions in Southeast Africa. His explorations yielded invaluable knowledge about the region and countless specimens for museums and private collections. His multi-faceted legacy embodies the meaning of Victorian-era African exploration.
He sets the imagination alight as a combination of English gentleman and wild and rugged hunter who wandered the Dark Continent. He is lauded as a formidable character with exceptional qualities, able to build enduring relationships with chiefs and high-ranking western personalities alike. His interest in natural history from a young age make his tours to Africa and his accomplishments there seem almost preordained. Stories of his real-life adventures appeal to the curiosity in us all and continue to inspire true appreciation of the natural world.
The world-famous Selous Game Reserve is named after him and our Rufiji™ range was named after the Rufiji River which runs through the reserve. We have a deep emotional connection with Selous and the Rufiji and so, in designing our clothing and luggage, we drew inspiration from the reserve, the river, and the man.
Say no to plastic packaging
Your Mara&Meru™ bag is packaged in a re-usable canvas drawstring bag. At The Safari Store, we are working hard to eliminate plastic from all of our packaging. This forms part of our commitment to a green future and the preservation of the environment, so future generations can enjoy pristine natural spaces.
A note about canvas and leather: We stand by the quality of the construction of our canvas and leather range and the quality of the safari-grade canvas and leather we use to make our bags. We have also expedition tested all of our canvas and leather luggage and bags so that we know just how tough they are. Canvas and leather are, however, fabrics and, as with all fabrics, they have their limitations. While cases are few and far between and we have not experienced puncturing on our own safaris and expeditions, fabric, by its very nature, is able to puncture or tear if subjected to force, sharp objects, if thrown along an abrasive surface, or other forms of harsh handling.
⊙ MATERIAL: These bags are beautifully crafted from quality safari-grade canvas and leather.
⊙ POCKETS & COMPARTMENTS: This washbag has a large main pocket which is zipped, two smaller pockets which can be closed with studs, and a smaller hidden pocket which is accessible via a zip at the top of the washbag. The two smaller pockets are designed to house the small soap box which we made for our Mara&Meru™ washbag range.
⊙ HOOK: A neat hook folds into the closed bag. On opening, hang your washbag above the sink or bath to easily access your toiletries.
⊙ STRAPS: The leather straps allow for the folded washbag to be securely closed for travelling.
⊙ DETAIL: The stitching is strong, neat, and complements the curves of the bag. The brass buckles and studs offer durability and aesthetic detail to the overall look of the bag.
⊙ ZIPS: The durable zips are strong and long-lasting and have leather tags to make zipping and unzipping easy on the hands.
⊙ SOAPBOX: The soapbox was custom designed to accompany the washbag and fits perfectly into the two smaller pockets. It is embossed with our Mara&Meru™ logo which represents the pride of workmanship that goes into each product.
