Field Notes From a Safari to Kruger National Park
We've just done a safari from south to north in Kruger National Park and, with summer on the way, the days are hot, humid, and stormy. If you are headed to southern Africa on safari soon, have a quick read of safari clothing field notes from @safariclaire below.
"Looking back on the last three weeks in Kruger, I have a few wardrobe observations for summer safari-goers.
1. I went on my first Kruger walking safari and the Serengeti Joggers have become my walking trousers of choice for comfort and ever-important safari colour. Loved them! It was an overcast morning and I was also really pleased to have the Pioneer Safari Jacket with me - fleece and sleeves on the open game viewer used to get to the start of the walk (with a pack of wild dog on the way), but light enough to walk in.
2. I've been on green season safaris over the past few years, but I don't recall ever feeling so hot. High humidity and a biting sun were sometimes inescapable. The Pioneer Shirt does exactly what it says on the box. If not for the feather-light long sleeves, I would have experienced very bad sunburn.
3. I wore one of my Serengeti T-Shirts every day. I own all three colours and so washed them as I went.They are light and breezy and are my summer safari first choice - without question. On game drives, I would keep my Pioneer Shirt handy and cover up from time to time, but this is my ideal shirt combination for hot conditions.
4. If you are staying outside the park (or inside for that matter!), pack a warm and waterproof layer. We drove past many people who had spent over an hour driving on tar roads on the back of open game viewers in driving rain and it looked especially unpleasant for those in short sleeves and sunglasses.
5. Being on the back of an open game-viewer on a windy day is typically not great for wearing a hat. I was wearing the Adventurer Hat, which hardly moved while we were on the road. It looked like black magic, but it was really the clever internal drawstring."
